Terminal Emulator for Android

Access your Android's built-in Linux command line shell. Unleash your inner geek!
This is a new version of the popular "Android Terminal Emulator" application. Same great program, just with a new name.
+ Full Linux terminal emulation.
+ Multiple windows.
+ Launcher short cuts.
+ UTF-8 text. (Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Thai, etc.)
+ Completely free. No ads, no in-app-purchases, no nag screens, nothing.
+ If you are having trouble entering text, try installing the free "Hacker's Keyboard IME". (Especially if you have a Samsung or HTC device.)
+ This app isn't a game emulator.
+ This app won't help you root your phone or change your phone's IMEI.
+ You need to know (or be willing to learn) how to use the Linux command line to use this app.
+ You may want to install a set of command line utilities like "Busy Box" or "Debian chroot" in order to add commands beyond the commands that come built into your Android device.
+ If you get a -505 error when trying to install this app under Android 5.0, it means that some other app is using the same permissions. You will have to uninstall the other app in order to install Terminal Emulator for Android. (People tell me that "jrummy's Toolbox Pro" causes this problem.)

Great BUT I need help with something I am semi fluent in Linux command line so that is not my problem, I am trying to run a shell script that needs to be run without having to keep the app directly open. When I switch tab for even a second it says "Killed", and I haven't seen any options to avoid that. Anyone know how to fix this? Full Review

This App Sets Up a Linux Shell Environment This app has allowed me to discover much about the inner workings of Android devices. I have the advantage that I have Linux experience. Not all devices are made alike. Success will depend on the device. This app is best had with Hacker's keyboard. Linux commands are created by making a symbolic (soft) links to busybox or toolbox. This however requires ROOT. The filesystem on the user's "sdcard" does not support symbolic links. Without root the user is limited to the Linux commands that the manfacturer put in. Use the cp command to copy some files from internal memory to the sdcard. Use df to find block devices (drives) . Type the word "busybox" and read how Android uses one file to implement numerous commands. On many devices "toolbox", is used in place of busybox. This app may need work on the higher versions of Android. Full Review

Best Terminal Emulator ever for Android! Having been a Linux user and supporting this developer for a long long time, this app makes it all happen to anyone who wants that same experience as they did when Linux was first introduced. Android IS an OS based on the Linux Kernel and Jack has brought full functionality of it on your Android device. P.S. I suggest root users to install Busybox to get more than what they bargained for. Trust me it's worth it. Full Review

It's... okay Its a great tool and all but you will have to be familiar with both the Windows CLI and the Linux Shell. Even with that it doesnt have all the commands you want and directorys/files arnt color coded. Im certified network and OS specialist if u needed to know if this was valided from a source with experiance. Full Review

The special key sequences don't work. But what I found interesting is when you click on Special Keys, why doesn't it simply allow you to click on a hyperlink for the VolUp+E for example. That way if they key combination sequence doesn't work for whatever reason, you can still select it from a menu? (I have a Pixel XL running 7.1.2) Full Review

ONE OF THE BEST THINGS IVE EXER USED! First of all THANK YOU, I could not have ever fixed my tablet without this app and my Mac. This has the potential to be anything conceivable if you know your stuff and have the right binaries. Forget all these massive applications that do one thing, likely you can do it with this! This app has been the best terminal emulator since I have started using it a few years ago and nothing changed to be honest. The only missing thing is a STOP or EXIT button in the expandable notification that would let user to exit emulator running in background without entering the actual app. Hope developer is reading comments and will implement this functionality. This is a Linux Terminal It is as close to root as possible without being root. Many of the system partitions are available for read. but not write. To see if you have busybox type "busybox" and click ENTER. If you have busybox a lengthy text description will appear which can be copied to the clipboard, pasted into a text editor and saved as a text file. The Linux commands the manufacturer has built in are available to the command line. They are usually created with a symbolic link to busybox or toolbox. Full Review

Excellent I have to agree with another posting I read. The app is going to do what it claims. Sure not every app is compatible with every device. That being said, if you request instructions to use the app then you did not read the description. The developers provide the tools for you to access Linux commands. They are not going to teach you the command syntax. I'm sure there's an app for that. Full Review

Best Ive tried others, and have to keep. coming back to this one. Could use a few extra tweaks (screen/tmux integration via swipes), but it can emulate cntrl-C and Tab and I can hit Esc. Those are mandatory.! Full Review

Very useful. Although, I think the language is difficult but I guess it's irrelevant. It's just really hard to write on tiny touch-screen (just to show reality) but at least it can be used to fix files anywhere. To me, it's fine as it is; I like it lightweight. Full Review

Edit: Reduced a star because of poor copy paste functionality. See termux. It's copy paste is excellent. We need drag handles for copying. Older review : Works great, free, open source too. What more you want? Full Review

I love this I'm sure to sound like a noob but I didn't think much about my phone being organized much like my Linux system at home until this app made it simple to poke around the shell. And without having the worry of rooting my connection to the world! Btw, I'd recommend switching to "Hacker's Keyboard" whenever using this, in order to take advantage of the arrow keys, function keys, etc. Full Review

The only shortage of this app was the terminal report itself as a password field, and the input method will change to password mode. And the google IME in password mode may ignore terminal controlling code(like ctrl-c it will only recognize to character "c") Full Review

An essential bit of kit for when nothing but a nuts-and-bolts tty will do. Clever mapping of key modifiers to the hardware buttons makes the interface surprisingly practical in everyday use. I wouldn't want to use it for an extended shell session, but for those moments when you need quick access to the prompt, this (in combination with the Hacker's Keyboard) comes highly recommended. This is an excellent terminal environment for Android/Linux users who need to tinker around on their devices in ways not otherwise afforded by stock apps and settings. I've used it for as long as I've used Android devices and have never had a single complaint. Would be nice to see its creator release more software! Full Review

No telnet Would be a lot more useful if it included a built in native telnet command. I'm finding most android and linux systems dont bundle or install telnet by default. No not ssh, I said telnet. The world still uses telnet to connect to remote and lan systems... its really annoying to try and use linux and find you have to always install more dependency crap when you just want to GET THINGS DONE (tm). Was: incredibly powerful! Now: missing features I have used this app for many years. I noticed a while ago that the control modifier (volume down) no longer worked. I tried making it volume up but that didn't work either. Sad because I really like this app but it's worthless if I can't send ctrl-c commands. I uninstalled Terminal Emulator and tried Termux. Termux seems to work better and the modifier keys all work. Full Review
